The ratchet socket wrenches available in the market have mainly two main products: the long and short tail ones. Both these products have their own benefits and drawbacks. But, the short tail is more convenient to use than the long tail ones. Hence, it has become the most popular of the two main products in the ratchet socket wrench category.

Long tail wrenches are mostly used for drilling purposes. They are usually wider than their short counterparts and have a larger area where you can drill. They can accommodate up to three different sockets and their size depends on the model of the wrench. Apart from their wide width, they also come with ratchet foot extensions or special thumb knobs. These knobs are ideal for working on difficult surfaces. As they come with feet, you would not have to worry about your feet slipping out of their holes.

The second type of the ratchet wrenches are the ones with six point drives and metric (M) drive sockets. They have very large areas in which to work. While using these drives, you can comfortably reach both sides of the bolt and you do not have to worry about your hands slipping out of the holes. The six point drives are also very handy when you are using larger bolts. Unlike the short tail drives, you can go in any direction with the six point drives. They are perfect for working in tight spaces like ceilings and walls.

The last type is the double socket set. They look like the regular double ring gears with the exception that the side drive sockets are in place of a regular six-point drive socket. When the socket is turned clockwise, the side drive sockets move clockwise. On the other hand, the metric (M) drive sockets move clockwise. The advantage of using this kind of wrenches is that you can reach both sides of a bolt even when it is not aligned correctly. The disadvantage is that you need two sets of wrenches when using this kind of wrenches.

The last kind of the ratchet wrenches are those that come with bit sockets. They are perfect for doing precision surface stripping and drilling. With the bit sockets, you can drive right into surfaces like concrete, stone, and asphalt easily. The disadvantage of using the bit wrenches is that they are not as strong as the other types of the ratchet wrenches. In addition, the ratchet wrenches usually have limited threading so that they can only fit into standard size holes.
